Seeing is Believing
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
As winter ends, so too does the Foundation’s second Winter Warmth campaign. Once again, many generous local residents have contributed their Winter Fuel Payments to help pay the bills of older local residents living in fuel poverty.
Several have donated although they are not yet 60 and don’t qualify for these payments. But they recognise the harsh combination of rising bills, bitterly cold weather and vulnerable older people struggling in these difficult times to keep their heating switched on.
But not everyone gets it. A local restaurant supported our campaign by inviting its diners to add £1 to their bills, most of which start at £80 for dinner for two. Some have done so, but many have derided the request, saying they just don’t believe that, in our well-off Borough, fuel poverty exists at a level 50% higher than the London average.
We bring these surprising inconsistencies to your attention, and give you the opportunity to join us in addressing them. At a time when foodbanks are appearing across the Borough and recession continues, more and more of our neighbours need your help. Please believe it!
